heres the second chapter!
Not a kid
Rain slung the backpack onto the floor. It was very heavy, which was unsurprising as it was stuffed with coconuts. She began to pull the coconuts from the bag.
“Hey, Jack!” she shouted over to him. He hurried over, looking tired and stressed as always.
“Hi, Rain…” He saw the coconuts she was pulling out of the backpack. “Is-is that my backpack? Coconuts? Did you go into the jungle alone? I told you, that’s not safe!”
“I can look after myself, Doc,” she said sourly, using Sawyers nickname for him. Out of all the castaways, he was the worst for telling her what to do, and she tired of it very quickly. “Here’s your backpack-though who made it yours, I aint got the faintest idea.”
Jack sighed heavily.
“I’m sorry Rain, I guess we’re all stressed out. Thanks for this.” With a somewhat forced smile he reached out a hand for the coconuts, then withdrew it as he realised she hadn’t meant for him to have them.
“I picked ‘em, I keep ‘em. Right?” Her glare was icy cold.
“Right.” Jack muttered, then as he watched her struggle over the sand carrying four coconuts wondered why he had just let a teenager completely take control of the situation.
Sawyer sat down on the rock heavily, with a small bottle of Vodka in his hand, another by his side. He sat moodily glaring at the ocean. Kate had been excessively friendly with Jack over the last few days. Charlie wasn’t funny no more, not since Claire got taken. And he was still seriously unpopular, even after his betting over Golf with the other castaways. Oh, and here was the other unpopular one. Great. This should just about make his day.
“Well, if it aint lil miss sunshine.” He beamed, sarcastically.
“Rain.” She said, somewhat unfazed by this throwaway remark. To his surprise, she sat down by his side, and began to throw rocks into the ocean.
“I gather you haven’t been up to getting fruit much lately?” She asked, indicating to his lack of food.
“Yeah, so?”
“I have.” She showed him the four sizeable and ripe coconuts. “You want ‘em?”
Now Sawyer was not accustomed to charity, or in the habit of taking it, but those coconuts would be good.
“Yeah, alright.” But as he reached over to pick one up she grabbed his wrist.
“I meant as a trade.”
“Sure, sure, me too.” Stupid, he thought inwardly. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
“So what do you want, little Cloud? I got plenty sunscreen, few girly medical supplies from the plane…”
“I need one of those.” She was indicating to the bottle of Vodka in his left hand. Sawyer sighed. It would have been really nice to have some Coconut.
“I can’t be doling out vodka to thirteen year olds y’know.”
Rain glared daggers at him.
“I’m sixteen actually.”
“Whatever. You still just a kid, and I aint prepared to get myself beaten up by the jackass police agai- Argh!”
Rain, at hearing her second- least favourite word in the world (the first being Ana-Lucia) had done what she always did. She leapt on him and attacked him. Although she didn’t weigh all that much, could never be bothered with eating really, she took him by surprise and he was overwhelmed. She punched his face hard, but he gathered himself up after a second and rolled over so he was on top of her instead. He stayed there, still, for a few moments and in that time she became very aware of his weight and how close his face was to hers… she only had to pucker up her lips and lift her head slightly and they’d be kiss… and soon as she thought it she stopped. Her hand grasped the nearby coconut and she brought it up onto his head, causing him to yell out in pain and leap up off her. He backed away several steps. She was a lot stronger than he had thought. She got to her feet slowly, calmly, though she was panting hard. She walked up to him, slowly, and deliberately. She gripped his head in her hands and kissed him on the mouth. It lasted only a few seconds, but he wasn’t expecting it, and he forgot himself, he didn’t push her away. Just as he began to enjoy it she pulled her face away from his, picked up the bottle of Vodka and told him:
“I am not a kid.” Then she walked away, breaking into a run into the jungle.
