This is exactly what I was thinking.
When Henry "reintroduced" himself as Benjamin to Jack, he stated that he had lived on the island all of his life. So any injuries or maladies that occur through the course of one's life
after arriving on the island would take nature's course instead of the island's.
Break your back while on the island, and you're paralyzed. Arrive on on the island paralyzed with a broken back, and you're cured -- unless the effects return once you leave the island.
