Just listening to the new official podcast, and there was a question about the ciggie in the Pearl hatch, which when asked about it Carlton said...

'Well it was a ciggerette... which was still burning'

I looked back at the ep, and I didn't think it was lit... but that's fairly interesting if it was because it means someone was just there before Eko and Locke...
